History

William Richards concentrates his practice in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications in the mechanical, chemical, process, electrical, and medical devices arts and in trademark and copyright matters.  In addition, his practice involves client counseling and the preparation of patentability, freedom-to-operate, and infringement opinions.  In the area of client counseling, Mr. Richards has experience in defining the intellectual property landscape and the evaluation and expansion of portfolios in numerous technology areas.   Prior to forming The Richards Law Firm, Mr. Richards was IP Staff Attorney at the Battelle Memorial Institute where he also provided extensive IP assistance to small high-tech startup companies.  This experience has provided him with an in-depth understanding of the needs and constraints of corporate clients.  Previously, as an Associate at the law firm of Barnes & Thornburg, in addition to patent prosecution, he was involved in patent and trademark infringement litigation, including expert witness-related issues.
